Strategy for an Ageing Society

The Welsh Government have published (15 December) a draft Strategy for an Ageing Society.

The Strategy sets out a vision where we create an age friendly Wales that supports people of all ages to live and age well and where everyone looks forward to growing older. The Strategy builds on and extends the foundation that has been developed in Wales since 2003 through predecessor Strategies that have seen our country leading the way in addressing the implications of an ageing society including establishing the World’s first Commissioner for Older People.

Four national aims have been set out in the draft Strategy:

  • enhancing well-being
  • improving local services and environments
  • building and retaining people’s own capability
  • tackling age-related poverty.

The views received will inform an action plan which will guide the delivery of these national aims.

Cymru Older People’s Alliance have over the past 18 months been fully involved in the development of the Strategy that has been published for consultation. We do believe that if it’s aims and priorities are fully implemented then there will be significant benefits for older people in Wales both now and in the future. We would encourage 50+ Forums and their members, as well as older people more generally to consider this draft Strategy and to respond to the consultation.
