CODE OF PRACTICE
- Trustees have the right to:
- be spoken to politely;
- be treated with respect;
- have their point of view listened to and given consideration;
- have their efforts and achievements valued;
- be treated fairly;
- speak out if they are the victim of bullying or harassment, and to expect their complaint to be taken seriously.
- Trustees must:
- comply with a reasonable requirement agreed by the Board within the terms of its Constitution;
- comply with the Cymru Older People’s Alliance policies and procedures.
- Trustees have a responsibility to:
- consider others in the completion of their duties;
- express their point of view without being aggressive;
- listen to what others say and respect their point of view;
- take prompt action if they witness or are made aware of unreasonable behaviour, including bullying or harassment in any form. Trustees should not assume it is someone else’s problem;
- ensure that they act at all times with honesty and integrity, and in a professional manner;
EXPECTED PRACTICE FOR BOARD TRUSTEES
- Respect the Code of Practice (overleaf) and each other
- Read the paperwork before the meetings – note points to raise
- Raise any detailed questions beforehand
- Help keep the meeting to agenda timings
- Don’t be distracted by other interests, phones etc
- Don’t speak over other Trustees – raise your hand if you want to contribute
- Don’t create additional conversations – one person to speak at a time
- Maximise the time available at meetings by keeping focussed on the issue being discussed.
- Respect meeting/Zoom protocols.
- Don’t raise extraneous issues.
- Help ensure that all trustees have the chance to contribute.
- Keep your contribution brief and to the point
- Foster positive relationships with other members of the Board
- Praise positive progress but be clear about where change is needed – politely and without attaching unwarranted blame
- Always respond promptly to emails about COPA Business
- Contribute outside of Board meetings – representing COPA, meeting Forums, through sub committees etc but always report back.
- Above all, remember why we are on the COPA Board i.e. to work together to improve lives of older people
